English Country Traditions

A celebration in text and art of the many facets of English country life, from bee-keeping to cider-making, cattle shows to corn harvests, thatching a roof to planting a cottage garden, elegantly discussed by Ian Niall and exquisitely (and abundantly) illustrated with Christopher Wormell’s beautiful and precisely realized wood engravings.

Ian Niall is a pen name used by John Kincaid McNeillie, a prolific author and nature journalist from Galloway, Scotland. He published over forty books, including realist fiction and essays on natural history, and wrote a weekly column for Country Life magazine. He may be best known for his novel No Resting Place, the film version of which is considered a classic of Scottish cinema.
