Fred Smith was born in 1933, in Carthage, Missouri, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1958. He lives in northern California. He was employed by the Federal government for twenty-five years, and for the past ten years worked at a payroll company. His teachers include the poets Allen Tate and Tom Clark.
